When I first read this book, it was because I needed some answers. I want to know what is God's standard/stand towards honesty.
In my life, I was rarely truthful, I can lie without batting an eyelid. I mean who can't? How many times have we lied unknowingly. How many people can stand up and said: "I've never lied before" (seriously, I believe you are lying now) Is white lie a lie? How to be honest without hurting the other person feelings? How to be more tactful? How to stand up for the truth even though it might get you fired? There are so many questions that I wanted to ask, to find out.
After reading, I learnt that one needs to speak the truth, even though the truth hurts. You have to let the other person know. Lying accumulates and in the end, everything is going to be let out of the bag.
one of my favorite lines are: "When the bible calls us to gentleness, it does not comment weakness obsequiousness, or hesitancy of speech. Rather, it endorses speaking the truth with quiet confidence, avoiding severity or harshness. When we know we're on the side of truth, not to mention on the side of the God of truth, then we can speak with genuine humility and kindness, even when the stakes are high"
To be gentle and tactful yet firm is certainly hard. To have the willing heart to change is harder (: But it's worth it.
